Making Cinnamon Toast

A quick snack/breakfast idea that kids can make themselves:

Cinnamon Toast!

I toasted the bread, put some butter in a bowl, mixed up some sugar and cinnamon together and let the girls make their own cinnamon toast by spreading their butter with a butter knife and sprinkling the cinnamon and sugar on with a spoon.

They had a blast and it made them feel so grown up, making their own breakfast and all - even getting to use a knife!

Reading and Storynory

Shanti, in particular, really enjoys Storynory.  She just loves listening to stories, especially the happily ever afters!  Storynory has become part of the bedtime routine on the nights when Shanti gets to choose what to listen to on the iPod.

As a mom of three little ones who wants to encourage her children to enjoy not just books but good books but doesn't always have the time or ability to access and to read all of the classics, I truly appreciate that Storynory's Natasha does a lot of this reading for me for absolutely free!  :)

We really like reading around here...any time, any place.

Mayborn Children's Museum

On our way home from a weekend visiting some friends down south, we ran into some rain and bad traffic. So we used the opportunity and stopped by Waco to see some other old friends. Our friend suggested we visit together at the children's museum on Baylor's campus.

What a great idea!

Overheard: The Princess Version

Overheard

Shanti, dressed in her princess dress-up clothes, closes her eyes, and whispers to the apple she is gripping in her hand, "I wish a prince would come and carry me away to his castle."

She then takes a bite of the apple, grasps her hands to her chest, and dramatically falls to the ground, as if the apple was poisonous.

She's never even taken a drama class!

A Lesson in Economics for a 4 year old...(or maybe it was for mommy)

We love the My First Little House Books. One of our favorites is "Happy Birthday, Laura!" and we love singing "Pop Goes the Weasel" right along with Pa.

This morning, Shanti walked into the kitchen as I was finishing breakfast, holding up a spool of red thread.

"Mommy, what's this?"

"Umm...It's thread."

"I know THAT. But what's it on?"

"Oh. That's a spool. You know, like in the song 'Pop Goes the Weasel'."

And I commence singing, "A penny for a spool of thread, a penny for a needle. That's the way the money goes. Pop goes the weasel."

"Oh. Okay."

"When Laura (Little House on the Prairie) was alive, a spool of thread only cost a penny. But you know how much this spool of thread cost? Twenty-nine pennies! Prices sure have gone up since Laura's time, haven't they?"

"Yeah."
